Interview | Petroglyph QA |

Hey Guys,
Welcome to the Second Interview with Petroglyph Games.
This time we have PAT PANNULLO aka Darth_Torpid around the EAW community or just Torpid-PG on the Petroglyph Forums. He's gone ahead and answered some questions given from some of the community and a few that I came up with.
Lets get on to the QA then
Q1. How do you think EAW went?
[Pat] It was a huge challenge to Petroglyph – a high-profile license as our first project, but I think it went very well.
Q2. Are there any plans to extend in another game what Silri does at the end of Forces of Corruption? If not what is the PG-Canon for what happens with the Zann Consortium and Silri?
[Pat] As with all projects developed by an independent developer for a publisher, where EAW and FoC goes from here is really up to LucasArts. We definitely has some initial ideas as to where the story goes from the end of FoC but nothing solid enough that I would consider it PG-Canon.
Q3. Are there any possibilities of a future RTS Star Wars Game by you guys?
[Pat] That’s up to LucasArts J We would be happy to take on the project if they asked.
Q4. Can you extend on what features were in the original builds of Empire at War? Its been commented on a number of times that things like Political Control and other Rebellion-esque features can be seen left over in the XML and LUAs.
[Pat] Political control was a system that determined how long it took to take over a planet. Some heroes would influence political control such that they could take over planets more quickly than if they were elsewhere. There were all manner of things that could influence the system. It was considered too complex for inclusion in an already complex game, so we cut it. It’s not totally lost, however – the corruption system in FoC is very similar to what we had in mind. The only other Rebellion-esque thing I can think of that got cut was the ability for Rebel units to land and stay on a planet they didn’t own without taking it over. This eventually got simplified into the raid system.
Q5. If you could make any modifications to the way the game works at present what would they be? IE. Nerfing certain faction units.
[Pat] It’s been a long while since I’ve looked at EaW (always looking to the future, this one is!) but I know that there are many complaints that the Consortium units are a bit overpowered, so perhaps another balance pass on those would be warranted.
Q6. What made you use a Breakable Hardpoint system in Empire at War? Why not just a solid state ship that released smoke particles when they exploded?
[Pat] I believe the hard point system was Joe Bostic’s idea, but it was something he wanted to do for a long time. Destroyable hot spots have been a staple on many other types of games (like boss battles in arcade shooters) and they’re fun. And of course, the fun factor from EaW hard points carried over into the customizable Hierarchy hard points in UAW.
Q7. Why did petro decide to remove so many Game features (Such as diplomacy or [3 way battles from FoC]) that were present in the E3 Presentation game play. If they were forced to cut some of the EaW features because of time constraints, why didn't they include them in the expansion?
[Pat] It was years ago, but I don’t recall a diplomacy ever being a functional system or even being part of the original design. XML tags were put into place for the political control system, but that system was never really completed (code-wise) either. Three-way galactic conquest multiplayer was something we wanted to get in for FoC (three-way didn’t make sense really until we added a third faction), but the code challenge involved (that is, a complete re-write of the original EaW multiplayer engine) would have put the expansion over budget and over time, so it had to be abandoned.
A Massive thanks goes out to Pat for taking the time to read and answer the QA
I'll try and get a couple more of these sent off to PG over the near future aimed at different things. So if you want any SENSIBLE questions answered. Post them over on the forums : LINKY |
